Family Guilty in Substance Abuse

You have a loved one who is suffering from substance abuse. It may be a child, a spouse or another family member. You know what they are going through because you see it. You know they cannot stop and you just want to stop for them. What can you do? How can you help?

Guilty Happens Often

For many families in these situations, guilty is one of the worst parts of the process. It is what causes problems within the family, too. Being guilty, though, is not the answer. Being supportive and offering solutions is. If you feel guilty, consider the following.

  • In many scenarios, families of those who suffer from substance abuse need to seek help from a therapist. The therapist will help the family, as a whole, to heal.
  • Family guilty requires acceptance. A family member must accept what he or she has done to contribute to the problem, such as giving money to the person suffering from drugs. However, this means making a change, too. You do not want to be the enabler.
  • Finding solutions is necessary. Within families where substance abuse is a daily problem, it is often necessary. This may mean moving, committing to change or therapy.

For those suffering from substance abuse, the real fact is, it can happen to anyone. If your family is supportive and has the means to do so, getting help is the route to take. This provides an opportunity for all in the family to get past the guilt and to get closer to the happiness.

Choices

Alcoholism is a very serious and prevalent problem in the world today. It may seem that those who are victims to this problem were somehow in differing circumstances.

The truth is though that has the famous saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.” The same is true with alcoholism. The journey to addiction starts with one drink.

As we see friends or loved ones go from one drink to social drinking to a complete addiction, it can be very difficult. While we can be very supportive as they struggle to battle their addictions, it is important to keep in mind that it is their choice.

As much as we want to help, forcing people to change their habits will not truly help them overcome their addictions. We can persuade, encourage, educate, and even firmly-demand, but it is important to remember that the bottom-line is that they must desire the change for themselves.

They must recognize the problem. They must see it for what it is–an addiction that is taking over their lives. At first the they consumed the alcohol, and now the alcohol is consuming them, their lives, and the lives of those they influence. They must realize that it has changed them and that the consequences of this habit are negative and undesirable.

Only after a realization of their actions and their consequences can they really take the first step to recovery. Recovery has to come from the inside-out. The person needs to recognize and choose to eliminate alcohol from daily use.

If we force, it can have the opoosite effect of what we hope. Those we are trying to help, may get defensive and even more protective of their behavior. Forcing the issue will not stimulate them to make better choices.

As we realize the important value of one’s choice, it can help us and others better deal with situations where alcohol addiction is involved.

For many that are battling Addictions, a support-system like an Alcoholics Anonymous offers a safe environment where the addict can hear stories for others who are battling the same problem.  Oftentimes it is in this group setting where the addict has their first breakthrough in realizing they actually have a problem.   Hearing from others who have the same Addictions often unlocks hidden keys of hope and wisdom that the addict can turn to when times get tough.
Just about every city in the United States is equipped with some form of Addiction Anonymous settings.  By researching for even just a few minutes, you can find the program that fits your needs, its schedule and availability on your days off.
Addiction is a painful and disturbing process for everyone involved.  By attending these group-therapy sessions, the addict can learn, heal and return to being themselves in a matter of months.

Millions of American’s battle drug addiction.  Some make up their minds to never do drugs, and others spend year’s finding ways to overcome the issues that are ruining their lives.
When all else has failed, Rehab is a great option for getting your loved one clean and back on their feet.  Rehab offers a drug addict the chance to see and feel the stories of others that have battled similar problems in a controlled environment.  For many, the Rehab process is painful as the body goes through withdrawal during the first 48-72 hours.  A professional environment can help ease the pain of those first few crucial hours.
For many that have broken laws along their path of self destruction, Rehab may be court ordered.  Drug addict’s chances of recovery are much better when they realized they have a problem versus someone telling them they have a problem, so it’s important for the addict to enter Rehab with a state of mind that is conducive to healing.
Beating a drug addiction without the help of trained professionals can be nearly impossible.  Many have beaten their ‘issues’ and many have died trying to beat their issues by themselves.
There is no shame in Rehab as those in attendance have seen the same things the addict has.  The staffs at many Rehab centers are there to help make the transition back to society much easier.  For many addicts, the first step towards recovery begins by talking about and acknowledging their problem, and this can easily be done in the confines of the Rehab center.

Can Electronic Cigarettes Help You Quit

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - AUGUST 19: Zack Neil...

Cigarettes are still a huge part of American and worldwide cultures. Many smokers wish to quit, but they seemingly can’t. Because of new technology, there is a way where you can alleviate some of the negative symptoms of smoking if you still choose to smoke. An electronic cigarette mimics a real one. In fact, e-cigs allow you to inhale nicotine, which is the main reason people continue to smoke. However, the electronic devices take out all the other negative chemicals.

The health risks for cigarettes are everywhere: on TV, in magazines, and even on the product labels. Still, that doesn’t deter those who wish to smoke. The question is why? Many studies have shown that the nicotine in cigarettes is highly addictive. An alkaloid, nicotine is found in the nightshade family of plants. In a typical cigarette, nicotine makes up roughly .6 to 3 percent of its dry tobacco weight.

Nicotine stimulates reward pathways that go on to produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of pleasure. The sensation entices the user to come back to the feeling time and time again. This is why nicotine in cigarettes is so highly addictive. And this substance is why people continually crave cigarettes, even when they want to quit.

While nicotine is part of a cigarette, traditional cigarettes are filled with many different chemicals and other fillers. If nicotine makes up only .6 to 3 percent of a cigarette, what makes up the other 97 percent? Substances such as tar, benzene, and formaldehyde make up the majority of the other ingredients. In fact, a typical cigarette can have trace amounts of over 4,000 different chemicals.

All these reasons point to why electronic cigarettes are such a great way to combat the addiction. It is a nicotine inhibitor; therefore, you allow yourself the nicotine without any of the other harmful chemicals associated with cigarettes.

If you’re a friend or a loved one that has decided to help someone through their Detox period while trying to overcame addiction, be prepared for just about anything.
Drug addiction is no laughing matter, and very few people can just make up their minds to quit.  For many, the attempt to get past drug addiction will be the hardest thing they undertake during this lifetime.
As the body goes through the Detox period, swings of emotion and sometimes abnormal bodily sweats and gigantic mood swings can occur.  Sometimes the best place for an individual to go through their Detox period is in a professional setting where doctors can administer drugs that will help with the Detox process.
If you’re going to help someone through this period, here are some examples of things that might help.
1.    Have thick skin – The Detox period is going to be filled with angry and sad moments, and you can expect just about any and all derogatory comments to fly at you with reckless abandon.
2.    Have plenty of fluids on hand – The person going through their Detox is going to sweat, and having water, soda and other non-alcoholic drinks around will help through the process.
3.    Plan on being there for more than a few days.  The typical Detox period takes 48-72 hours, so understand it’s not an overnight thing.  Have plenty of movies or music on hand to help pass the time.
4.    Encourage the person to keep a journal – Some of the most powerful healing processes are seeing in our own words the struggles we overcome.  By writing down the terrible and even happy moments, the individual going through the process needs to see it for themselves.
As stated earlier, Detox can be a long and painful process and may need to be done at the hands of a professional.
